Faces of Christ by Jane Williams

Faces of Christ by Jane Williams

A guided tour through what art can teach us about Jesus, using the different ways he has been portrayed throughout history and around the world to provide fresh insights into his personality

Jesus is one of the most commonly portrayed figures of all time in the artistic community. But what can all of his varying faces—coming from so many different ages and diverse countries around the world—tell us about him as a person? In this beautiful book, images of Jesus are used to explore his life and legacy, including Jesus as shepherd, Jesus as victor, Jesus as broken, and many more. With illuminating text and arresting images, this book is visually stunning and textually inspiring—the perfect gift for anyone with an interest in fine art, spirituality, or both.

The Angel Tree: Celebrating Christmas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Angel Tree: Celebrating Christmas at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Angel Tree: Celebrating Christmas at The Metropolitan Museum of Art showcases the magnificent collection of Neapolitan Baroque angels and crèche figures that has thrilled visitors from across the country each Christmas season for more than 50 years.

New fiber-optic lighting and a new tree now enhance its beauty.

More than 50 angels and 100 crèche figures, many sculpted by major artists of the period, represent all who came to worship the Babe. This is a true family book, starting with the story of the Nativity and then focusing on the scene in large, gloriously reproduced pictures of the angels and of townspeople and animals, shepherds and their flocks, kings and grand ladies.

Devotion by Design: Italian Altarpieces before 1500 by Scott Nethersole

Devotion by Design: Italian Altarpieces before 1500 by Scott Nethersole

Museum visitors today usually see pre-16th-century Italian painted altarpieces exhibited alone, as single paintings. Yet this beautiful catalogue shows that these works were once part of decorative, integrated schemes, and the original experience for viewers of the paintings was significantly different from our own.

Focusing on Italian altarpieces from the second half of the 13th century to the very end of the 15th, the book investigates the original functions and locations of altarpieces as well as the circumstances of their dislocations, dismantlings, and reconstructions. Regional variations are also analyzed, and the author examines altarpieces' formal and typological development, taking into account the wealth of related scholarship undertaken in the past thirty years.

Simply Jesus: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did, and Why He Matters by N. T. Wright

Simply Jesus: A New Vision of Who He Was, What He Did, and Why He Matters by N. T. Wright

We have grown used to the battles over Jesus—whether he was human or divine, whether he could do miracles or just inspire them, whether he even existed. Much of the church defends tradition, while critics take shots at the institution and its beliefs. But what if these debates have masked the real story of Jesus? What if even Jesus’s defenders have been so blinded by their focus on defending the church’s traditions that they have failed to grapple with what the New Testament really teaches?

Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author N. T. Wright summarizes a lifetime of study of Jesus and the New Testament in order to present for a general audience who Jesus was and is. In Simply Jesus, we are invited to hear one of our leading scholars introduce the story of the carpenter’s son from Nazareth as if we were hearing it for the first time.

“Jesus—the Jesus we might discover if we really looked,” explains Wright, “is larger, more disturbing, more urgent than we had ever imagined. We have successfully managed to hide behind other questions and to avoid the huge, world-shaking challenge of Jesus’s central claim and achievement. It is we, the churches, who have been the real reductionists. We have reduced the kingdom of God to private piety; the victory of the cross to comfort for the conscience; Easter itself to a happy, escapist ending after a sad, dark tale. Piety, conscience, and ultimate happiness are important, but not nearly as important as Jesus himself.” As the church faces the many challenges of the twenty-first century, Wright has presented a vision of Jesus that more than meets them.

Untie the Strong Woman: Blessed Mother's Immaculate Love for the Wild Soul by Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Untie the Strong Woman: Blessed Mother's Immaculate Love for the Wild Soul by Clarissa Pinkola Estes

"Call her Our Lady, La Nuestra Señora, Holy Mother-or one of her thousands of other names," says Dr. Estés. "She wears hundreds of costumes, dozens of skin tones, is patroness of deserts, mountains, stars and oceans. Thus she comes to us in billions of images, but at her center, she is the Great Immaculate Heart."

With Untie the Strong Woman, Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés invites us to reconnect with "the fierce and loving Blessed Mother who is friendly, but never tame-she who flies to our aid when the road is long and our hearts are broken, ever ready to rekindle the inner fire of our creative souls."

In her first book in more than a decade, Dr. Estés illuminates Our Lady through blessings, images, and narrative, including:

  • Stories of connecting with the Blessed Mother, including "Meeting the Lady in Red," and "Untie the Strong Woman"
  • Blessed Mother's many images from around the world, including "Litany of The Mother Road: A Chant of Her Incandescent Names;" "A Man Named Mary;" and "The Marys of Mother Africa"
  • The wild side of her love, including "Massacre of the Dreamers: The Maiz Mother;" "Holy Card of Swords Through the Heart;" and "Guadalupe is a Girl Gang Leader in Heaven"

"The Blessed Mother is often 'Friend to the friendless one' and Mother to all-yet too many of us have been estranged from her for far too long."

Untie the Strong Woman opens a channel to this sacred and nurturing force-"breaking through walls that have held us back from her presence, and instead, inviting us to shelter under her starry green mantle."

Landscapes of Prayer: Finding God in Your World and Your Life by Margaret Silf

Landscapes of Prayer: Finding God in Your World and Your Life by Margaret Silf

Seven landscapes of prayer, both classic and modern, are explored in this beautifully illustrated, contemporary book

The garden, the desert, the cave, the urban jungle, the mountaintop, the seashore, and the forest—all are fruitful areas for self-discovery, inviting us to connect with the mystery of God in our lives. Prayer is often perceived as a difficult, abstract exercise in which we close our eyes and seek God beyond our everyday experience in an invisible, ethereal realm. Here, concrete connections between the world of prayer and our physical reality are made—allowing us to revel in both the physical and spiritual worlds simultaneously, and become that much closer to God in the process.
